January 09, 2016

It’s the start of a brand new year, which makes it the perfect time to make some changes to your beauty regime. These ten tips are guaranteed to help you to look and feel your best for the big day, but they’re also great habits to stick to for life! Here are our suggestions - repeat after us...

1.  I will get a good night’s sleep

They call it beauty sleep for a reason! Getting 7-9 hours a night is one of the best things you can do for your body – not only will your skin and hair benefit from added repair time, but it’ll help reduce wedding planning stress. To add an extra boost at bedtime, apply a night cream with moisturising hyaluronic acid, or for super soft feet, use heavy duty foot cream and pop socks on over the top.

2.  I will wear SPF

No excuses here - even in winter, wearing a daily SPF is extremely important. Wearing a moisturiser with minimum SPF 15 every day will help prevent premature ageing, wrinkles and skin cancer. It’s a small change, but it can stop you from doing irreversible damage to your skin. We recommend the Olay Complete range for a budget-friendly all-rounder with added SPF.

3.  I will take my makeup off every night

We all know this one. With a huge abundance of micellar waters, balms and oils on the market, you have loads of options available for every skin type. Try to avoid makeup wipes if you can – they’re full of alcohol and preservatives, which can dry out skin, but they’re better than nothing!

4.  I will take care of my hair

If you want your locks to be in tip-top condition for the big day, then start taking your haircare seriously now. Cut back on heated styling tools (even your trusty hairdryer!), and apply heat protectant spray liberally when you do use them. Use a deep nourishing treatment once a week, and book yourself in for regular trims.

5.  I will start a skincare routine

The sooner you adopt good skin habits, the better! Firstly, you need to work out which skin type you have, and which products you should be using. Your skin type can change around every 7 years, so don’t just use the same products you have since you were a teenager! There are plenty of articles online that can help you work out your type – we like this Clinique diagnostic tool. Once you know your skin type, you can put together a list of products to use regularly. In can be as thorough as you want, but as a minimum, we recommend a good cleanser, exfoliating toner, moisturiser and night cream. Stick to your products and you’ll start to see a difference in your skin.

6.  I will clean my make-up brushes

You could have the best skincare regime in the world, but it’s all for nothing if you’re using germ-ridden makeup brushes every day! We recommend giving your makeup brushes a quick spritz with a cleansing spray like Superdrug’s B. Makeup Brush Cleanser after every use, and then giving your brushes a deep clean every two weeks.

7.  I will nourish my body

Don’t fall into the trap of going on faddy diets before your wedding day. Instead, make it your aim to listen to and nourish your body as best you can, and you’ll feel happier and healthier by the time the big day comes around. Stick to simple, whole foods, drink plenty of water, and take multivitamins if you feel you need an extra boost.

8.  I will dry body brush before every shower

It only takes five minutes, but dry body brushing has numerous health benefits. It’ll help improve circulation, which in turn can diminish the appearance of cellulite, and will slough away dead skin cells to leave you with softer, smoother skin. Particularly handy if you’re wearing a dress that’ll bare your arms on the day!

9.  I will watch the booze

We’re not saying cut out the wine entirely, but cutting down on your alcohol consumption is always a good move for your health. You’ll lose weight (alcohol is high in sugar, and therefore calories), sleep better and find that you’re less stressed – which can only be a good thing when wedding planning! If you’re not sure where to start, try limiting your drinking to weekends only.

10.  I will remember that my partner loves the way I look

Whatever you do, remember that the person you’re marrying loves you for you. Don’t go into a pre-wedding panic and start to change things about yourself for the sake of change. If you never tan, don’t hit the sunbeds before the day! If you’ve always worn your hair a certain way, don’t have a drastic hair colour change or chop. Keep this in mind, and you’ll look beautiful on the day.
