Romantic Ideas for an Antique Rose Wedding Scheme

February 05, 2016

Roses are always an incredibly popular flower for weddings and with good reason. They’re delicate, beautiful and always seem special. We link them with love and, on a practical note, they’re also robust enough to stand up to the rigours of a wedding day and still look stunning at the end of it. They come in so many colours and shades but it’s the antique rose with its dusky charms and vintage vibe that is always a wonderful choice, not just for your flowers but also as the basis for your whole wedding theme…

An antique rose wedding theme needs a colour palette of reasonably bold yet muted pinks. This isn’t a time for sweet pastels or bold hues but rather colours that seem to have been aged to perfection. To mirror the naturalness of the rose, you can use a variety of tints and tones rather than simply opting for one or two shades and using these rigidly throughout your day. A wedding that’s been inspired by antique roses needs to be soft without any hint of hardness.

If a coloured gown doesn’t appeal, then an unstructured and flowing gown is the way forward. You can add in lace and fabric embellishments but anything too ‘bling’ just won’t work. Elegant and delicate jewellery such as dainty pendants should compliment your look, as should naturally styled hair and make-up. Think tousled locks, undone buns and plaits and bare-there lips and eyes. Lightly coloured shoes in antique rose tones will be the ideal finishing touch. Bridesmaids can obviously wear gowns in dusky pink colours and again, sweeping skirts will be absolutely perfect.

Obviously, in terms of florals, the fabulous antique rose has to feature. Embrace the range of shades and delight in gloriously tonal and utterly unique bouquets and buttonholes. Pale ivory or soft white flowers work well to highlight the vintage colours and other delicate flowers such as lisianthus and freesias are beautiful accompaniments to the antique rose.

Contrasts work really well with this theme. The ethereal florals look amazing when set in burnished metal containers on bare wooden tables alongside dainty china and glass for example. In fact, the antique roses themselves look all the more outstanding when set against other elements and used sparingly.

Your cake could feature real flowers, sugarcraft petals, piped embellishments, hand-painted designs or anything that your cake maker can imagine for this delightful look. Prettily decorated cupcakes with swirls of dusky pink frosting or paste flowers would also be a great idea and bring even more femininity to your day. Coloured macaroons or signature cocktails also fulfill the brief of exquisite, almost fragile, style.

Stationery and other decorative accessories can all feature the dusky pink colour and, as always with this theme, the motifs and designs should be dainty with an almost ethereal air. Watercolours, calligraphy and French-style fonts all look stunning.

An antique rose wedding theme is really full of possibilities. You can use the colours and the florals themselves in ways that you like, you can bring in a range of other elements and you can style this look successfully in either a marquee or stately home. The central element, the rose itself, is the defining factor and these are always perfect.
