Caroline's romantic engagement story

As well as editing hitched.co.uk and writing for Glitzy Secrets I’m also planning my own wedding – meaning right now I’m pretty much living and breathing weddings in both my work life and my personal life.

I first met my fiancé Ian almost four years ago – one of my best friends was dating one of Ian’s best friends so it was inevitable that our paths would cross. We really hit it off and it sounds cheesy and typical but we could talk so easily and it felt like we had known each other forever. At the time I was living in Berkshire and Ian was living in Kent but despite living almost 90 miles apart we started dating.

Ten months later we moved in together in Surrey (a good middle ground!) and another year on we were lucky enough to spend three months living in Canada for my work and Ian was able to take a 12 week sabbatical from work to come with me.

A Canadian proposal

Although I had suspected an engagement might be on the cards in the coming months, the event itself took me completely by surprise. We were spending a last week in Vancouver before heading back home to the UK and had been subjected to a week of pouring rain! Scuppering any plans to go on a walk in the sunshine, one evening Ian insisted we go to the supermarket, I was pretty reluctant but with the promise of a Starbucks trip on the way home, I was persuaded to go with him – and I’m so glad I did because I had no idea what was about to happen!

We drove to a mountain peak where you can see the whole city of Vancouver lit up and buzzing with evening excitement. The contrast of being in this secluded and natural location combined with the view of this vibrant city is gorgeous and in the pouring rain Ian presented me with the most beautiful engagement ring and asked me to be his wife. I was so surprised I actually forgot to say yes straight away! I’d like to say we then went for a romantic meal somewhere spectacular but actually we decided we wanted to stay in just the two of us and instead went back to our apartment and celebrated with a bottle of wine and a pizza, it was just us and it couldn’t have been more perfect.

Starting the Planning

After getting engaged in October 2014, it then took us about three months to actually kick-start our planning. Having worked almost a decade in the wedding industry, I actually found it really hard to settle on a wedding style.

Unlike some girls, I hadn’t had my dream wedding planned out since I was five – or rather I had but my “dream wedding” was constantly changing. Sometimes I loved the idea of an enchanted woodland wedding filled with fairy lights and rustic details, next I would be thinking a small and intimate wedding with just our immediate families, then the next week I’d love an extravagant day filled with hundreds of smiling faces.

I love vintage weddings, rustic weddings, alternative weddings, traditional weddings and can fully appreciate each of those styles in their own right, but we struggled to settle on a style that felt like “us”.

In the end we decided to start searching for our venue before picturing our perfect wedding and it was actually the best thing we could have done because as soon as we found our location everything else just fell into place.
