March's Aquamarine - This Month's Birthstone Wedding Theme

March 13, 2015

Well hello and welcome to March! Isn’t the year speeding on by already? I love this time of year – Easter is just around the corner, the days are getting longer and spring is in the air. Perhaps it’s fitting that March’s birthstone is aquamarine because bright blue March skies are always so beautiful after the darkness of winter. So, if you’re looking to incorporate some blue brilliance into your wedding theme, then read on…

I think the first thing to say is that aquamarine is probably a colour to use now in moderation. A decade or so ago, we would have seen swathes of big blue whereas now, it’s often used alongside other colours and textures from crisp white for a clean, fresh look to pretty pinks to add a hint of vintage chic style.

To bring aquamarine into your bridal outfit, think accessories.  Blue wedding jewellery and shoes are definite ways of adding flashes of colour that work well. Also, don't be afraid of play around by mixing blue tones as this keeps everything looking soft and with a more modern, laid-back vibe.

For the guys however, being given licence to go blue is fantastic! Think blue suits with brown brogues, crisp shirts and ties for a cool retro look. If your chap doesn't fancy an aquamarine suit or you want to achieve a fresh summery style, go for accessories such as a simple aqua tie to add a subtle hint of colour.

Naturally blue flowers are limited but they are out there so speak to your florist to check on seasonal availability. Again, I love them as a carefully used counterpoint to other hues both in bouquets and table decorations. With table decorations, certainly don’t feel that you need to use blue flowers, go for fresh white or shades of pink blooms set in aqua ribbon tied jars to bring in the colour whilst keeping the overall look lighter and brighter.

Blue glass is of course a great way to enhance your aqua wedding colour scheme so go for bottles and vases for decorations or blue charger plates and water glasses also look great on tables. If this is something you're considering, do check with your venue or caterer that they have these otherwise you'll need to investigate hire options or search in charity stores in good time.

Whilst we're talking about tables, let's discuss other great things to put on them namely food and drink! Blue cocktails are an eye-catching option and I really like the blue ombre detailing on wedding cakes to incorporate colour in a softer way.

Little aquamarine accents can be spread throughout your wedding. Dessert tables dressed with an aqua runner, petite floral arrangements hanging from blue ribbons, not to mention watercolour stationery which is really on-trend right now so bring in the blue and fall for aquamarine.
