Classic Neutral Wedding Ideas For Your Big Day

February 26, 2017

So, let’s get one thing straight right now – neutrals are NOT boring! I know that when it comes to choosing your wedding colour scheme, neutrals might not be top of your list but trust me when I tell you, they really should be. If you’re yet to be convinced or if you’d like a little more inspiration then read on. Here are the best neutral ideas for your big day.

Why choose neutrals for your wedding?

Neutrals are just a dream for weddings. Firstly, they are just so flexible. A neutral palette can work for just any style of wedding you care to mention from traditionally elegant days to rustic and boho celebrations. Perfect in any venue and in any season, neutrals really are the best.

But just wait a moment because I will sound a slight note of caution because your neutrals so need a little lift to make them really shine. Hints of gold, matte metallic, natural botanical greens or gentle pops of colour will all elevate a neutral scheme. Choose your accent colour so that it complements your wedding style and you’ll definitely be on your way to wedding brilliance.

Neutral ideas for your wedding

For this feature, I’ve chosen a really romantic look because frankly, I’m all about the romance right now. However, the ideas in these images can be translated into any style of wedding so use them as a starting point to interpret in your own way.

Let’s start with outfits and accessories shall we? Brides, bridesmaids (of all ages!) and Mothers look brilliant in neutrals and I LOVE seeing a bride rocking the neutral look with an oversized bouquet, complete with trailing ribbons. Neutral shoes are also a great idea – slightly more practical than designs in ivory fabric and you know you’ll wear these after the big day too. In terms of jewellery, golds and pearls would be my choice for a softer, gentler look.

Guys can go neutral too with a light biscuit coloured suit in summer or a darker brown number in the winter months. Opt for white or ivory shirt, brown shoes and, depending on the accent colour you’ve chosen, this can work for ties and other accessories.

Neutral wedding decorations

Now here’s where the fun really starts because when you work with neutrals, decorating is just a dream. I love seeing foliage with a neutral palette and my current crush would be long wooden tables dressed with a simple foliage table runner, candles and neutral napkins hanging over the edge of each plate to soften the look. I also adore hanging decorations too so a suspended foliage decoration about each table would really make me happy!

For a countryside or barn wedding, bunting in linen or hessian would be a great choice and wooden details work for all neutral weddings. Whether you use old wooden boxes or packing crates to create cake stands, seating plans or statement decorations, wood really works. A wooden sign, framed with foliage and a few flowers or a big wooden backdrop to a cake table or photo booth would be just perfect.

If you’d like something a soft, it’s time to fall for fabric. A large trailing backdrop would be gorgeous for your ceremony or wedding breakfast or even fabric strips fringing a table edge turn the registrar’s table or cake table into something very special.

Oh neutrals, I’ve really fallen for you.
