Picking Flowers For An Autumn Wedding

October 01, 2017

Oooh, autumn, it’s such a wonderful time of year. The colours are gorgeous, the days are beautiful and love is most definitely in the air. Autumn weddings are some of my absolute favourites and I just love all the wedding flowers of the season too. I’m here to share my love of autumnal blooms so if you’re currently picking flowers for an autumn wedding, this is the feature for you…

Seasonal flowers for an autumn wedding

You might be surprised to learn that there are still loads of flowers that are in season in autumn. Using seasonal flowers can be great for your budget and for the look of your wedding so speak to your florist to find out what will be the best, most cost effective options for your big day.

Obviously, flower availability can vary depending on the weather conditions and the market itself but, as a guide, these are some of the brilliant blooms that you can expect to see in autumn:

  • Anemone
  • Aster
  • Calla Lilies
  • Dahlias
  • Freesia
  • Gypsophilia
  • Hydrangea
  • Lilac
  • Lisianthus
  • Marigold
  • Orchids
  • Roses
  • Stephanotis

Of those, dahlias and hydrangeas stand out for me the most. Hydrangeas are instantly recognisable and the purple/green mottled varieties are perfect for a vintage look. Cream hydrangeas are so timeless and work so well with coloured florals in a bouquet or centerpiece. Dahlias are the iconic autumn flower and they are the most fabulous statement flower. The Café au Lait variety is my personal favourite and the cream/blush colour could have been made for romantic autumn weddings.

Autumnal floral accessories

One of the things that makes autumn wedding flowers so gorgeous is that you’ve got a great selection of accessories at your disposal. Burnished leaves, seed heads, grasses, feathers (pheasant feathers are just beautiful), berries, fruits and other autumnal essentials make the best additions to your bouquets, buttonholes and decorations.

Autumn arrangements should definitely be all about texture too. Mix wooden containers with luxurious silks, rough twine with golden candelabras and chunky glassware with delicate accessories. You’ll create such a varied and interesting look that’s so reminiscent of autumn if you do.

On-trend autumnal flowers

I couldn’t end this piece without touching on floral trends. Autumn is definitely a time of abundance so large bouquets and decorations work so well. The big bouquet is a huge trend at the moment as is anything with an unstructured feel. Autumn should certainly be organic, natural and full of beauty.

Lastly, colours. Well, our love of creams and browns, blush pinks and nudes work well in autumn, particularly earlier in the season. As the days shorten, why not drop in deeper reds and popping oranges along with some hints of teal or peacock blue. That’s autumnal bliss right there!
