Hair and Makeup Tutorial for 1940s Hollywood Style

February 26, 2015

It's the star-studded, glittering event of the year that the fashion world waits for and we're sure you've noticed that the Oscars once again has been talk of the industry this week.  With sensational style gracing the red carpet from stars such as Faith Hill, Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston, the annual ceremony never fails to nod towards the elegance of Old Hollywood.

The grace and beauty of the 1940s Starlets remains one of the most admired vintage looks today so, when we held our photo shoot for The Hollywood Collection, we just knew it would be a style to share with you. So we asked talented make up artist, Sally Orchard and hair stylist, Holly Luisa Mitchell to share their secrets and show us how they achieved the classic movie star style on our stunning model Rosa. And guess what? It's a look us mere amateurs can achieve! Let's get red carpet worthy...

Sally's Step-by-Step to Hollywood Glamour:

Based in Cornwall, Sally Orchard is a respected makeup artist who specialises in bridal, fashion, beauty and editorial make-up. Known for using the highest quality brands such as Mac, Chanel and Bobby Brown, the talented make-up artist never fails to achieve a flawless look that lasts all day long. With over 20 years of experience, Sally also offers courses for complete beginners or professionals seeking further knowledge in their field and we are thrilled that the lady let us in on her secrets...

1.   I started by prepping the skin with Motives Face Primer to even the skin tone out and hold the makeup on all day!

2.  Mac Studio Fix Fluid Foundation was then applied with a foundation brush for a medium coverage with a natural finish.

3.  Mac Prolong Concealer was applied under the eyes. This is a great concealer for brightening under the eyes as its creamy but dries to a powder consistency.

4.  Our model, Rosa, had perfect eyebrows but for a slightly stronger Hollywood look I filled them in with Motives Eyebrow Kit.

5.  Motives Eye Base was applied to even out the skin tone on the eyelids and to hold the eye shadow in place.

6.  I blended Mac Eye Shadows in Wedge,  Espresso, Vanilla and Mushroom. I wanted to keep the eye shadow light and subtle as Hollywood glamour is all about the eye-liner and lashes!

7.  For a dramatic look, I applied Illamsqua gel eye liner along the top lashes to accentuate and define the eye.

8.  To complete the eyes, I applied three coats of Max Factor mascara and followed with Ardell Lashes in Whispies for naturally glamorous look.

9.  The cheeks were then contoured with Sleek Count Our Palette then I finished by applying Motives Sun Goddess Blush.

10. To hold the make up in place and to create a subtle dewy look, I powdered with Mac Prep and Prime and Mac Mineralise Skin Finish in Soft and Gentle.

11. For the statement lips, I outlined the lips in Mac Red Lip Pencil from Mac, then filled in with two coats of Rubywoo from Mac to give a vintage matt lip look. The final touch was adding YSL lip stain/gloss in red to add a little gloss.

Holly Luisa's 5 Easy Steps to Hollywood Hair

Holly Luisa is a talented hairstylist specialising in bridal hair and editorial. Based in Cornwall, she is also an experienced colourist. With a love of vintage style, Holly is passionate about creating authentic looks to reflect true bygone glamour.

To achieve the sleek cascading curls Holly created, just follow these simple steps:

1.  Use heated rollers to add volume, body and create the base of the curl. Allow the rollers to cool thoroughly and gently remove.

2.  Take medium to thick sections, add a spritz of hairspray to each section and curl around a wand or tong.

3.  Immediately pin the curled section into a barrel curl and leave for 10-15 minutes.

4.  Take out all barrel curls and gently brush the hair from root to end, watching the curl bounce into a soft wave and using hands to define waves.

5.  Finish with by spritzing shine spray to add a glossy finish and hairspray for extra hold.
