10 Heavenly Honeymoon Locations

February 23, 2016

If you’ve got a touch of the February blues and it feels like the fun is still a long way away then oh my goodness, have I got the perfect feature for you right here. What could be better than a spot of honeymoon planning so today, I’m bringing you my top ten heavenly honeymoon locations. I have to admit that this have been one of the toughest features EVER to write because how’s a girl to choose? But, I whittled my long list down to ten amazing destinations so fasten your seatbelts for takeoff…

Honeymoon ideas at Bora Bora and Dubrovnik

Bora Bora

Yes, I know it literally takes days to get there but the trials of the journey are so worth it when you arrive in Bora Bora. Think gorgeous and glamorous hotels, stunning water bungalows sat over crystal clear waters and the warm breezes of the South Pacific lapping over the lagoon. It’s been named ‘the best island in the world’ and it’s not hard to see why. Perfect for relaxing, diving and completely getting away from it all, Bora Bora is the perfect choice for honeymooners seeking luxurious sanctuary.

Dubrovnik

European minimoons are becoming more and more popular and with good reason. When there are so many fab locations within a couple of hours, why wouldn’t you escape? Dubrovnik, in southern Croatia is an absolute gem. It’s right on the coast, it’s full of things to see, old streets to wander around and fantastic bars and restaurants to visit. You must take a look at the brilliant Cave Bar in the Hotel More for a cocktail in the most unusual surroundings!

Dordogne and Rocky Mountains honeymoon destinations

A Treehouse In The Dordogne

The Dordogne in France is always going to be on my list of great places to go because it’s truly beautiful and still, amazingly, unspoiled. However, for a real honeymoon treat in this picture postcard region, how about booking yourself into one of the amazing treehouses at Chateaux dans les Arbres. These fabulous wooden structures high in the forest are the ultimate adult treehouse – imagine lounging in your own hot tub way above the ground as the night falls! If you’re not great with heights, do take a look at the Chateau Spa sur l’eau that floats on the lake and is equally wonderful.

The Rocky Mountains

For long-haul mountain beauty, you can’t beat Canada and the Rocky Mountains are just as amazing without the snow as they are in the winter. Stay in any one of the super luxury hotels that sit among these towering peaks or get back nature with a glam camping trip, canoeing the beauty lakes (you’ll even have you own chef to accompany you so don’t worry, there’s not much work at all on this honeymoon!)

Honeymoon location at Portofino

Portofino

Food lovers need look no further than Italy for their gastronomic honeymoon and pretty Portofino on the Italian Riviera is part traditional fishing village, part celebrity hideaway and it’s totally gorgeous for honeymooners - packed with picturesque spots, amazing places to eat and shop. The Hotel Splendido is named by some the ‘best hotel in the world’ but if you want to travel a little, there are loads of villages along the coast, easily accessibly by bus or taxi and you can also hire boats to jet out across the water. Heaven.

Chile

Hmm, I bet you weren’t expecting to see Chile listed in my top ten but I think when you’ve seen the Montana Magica, literally, the Magic Mountain, you’ll understand why it’s here. This is a hotel unlike any other – water tumbles down the outside, moss and vines climb the outside, the interiors feel like they’ve been carved into a tree and, if you saw a hobbit or an ewok walking out the front door, you wouldn’t be surprised. It sits hidden in a 300,000-acre nature reserve and as it only has thirteen rooms, you’ll have all the peaceful seclusion you could ever want in a hotel that definitely won’t be like anywhere you’ve ever stayed before.

Sri Lanka and Shropshire honeymoon ideas

Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka has been on my ‘must visit’ list for some time. The mere prospect of baby elephants at the famous orphanage won me over and that was even before I heard about the beaches, the temples, the food, the weather and the luxurious hotels that line the coast. I also want to climb Adam’s Peak – you set out whilst it’s still dark to arrive at the top as the sun rises which sounds like a pretty special start to married life to me.

Walcot Hall, Shropshire

I absolutely had to include a UK honeymoon in my list and Walcot Hall would be a superb spot to escape to post wedding. The Chapel is definitely the place to book – it’s tucked away in the woods, it’s quirky and brilliant inside and it’s full of all those little touches that make somewhere truly memorable. There are lakes with punts, lawns, gardens, woods and more to explore and lots to do in the local area too. Plus, with the foodie town of Ludlow close by, you can treat yourself to some spectacular meals on a regular basis!

Kho Phi Phi for the perfect honeymoon

Kho Phi Phi, Thailand

Yes, I had to mention Thailand and Kho Phi Phi, with its secluded beaches, clear waters and soaring cliffs is probably everyone’s vision of a perfect far-flung honeymoon. There are also amazing temples to visit and trips to take so don’t ever fall into the trap of thinking that Thailand is all about the beaches and nothing else. Hire local guides and explore by boat or get up early to fish in the blue waters. Yes, it can be busy and but there are still plenty of places off the beaten track so you’ll find somewhere perfect.

Santorini

Greece is, in so many ways, the perfect honeymoon destination. It’s far enough away that it feels like you’ve travelled, it’s close enough to home that you don’t waste days of precious holiday, it’s different, it’s warm, it’s full of great food and oh my goodness, the Greek Islands are beautiful. However, Santorini is definitely something special. Whitewashed houses, blue skies and bluer waters are impossibly pretty and the hotels are usually small and incredibly stunning. Katikies, with its famous infinity pool overlooking the Aegean mixes opulent accommodation and Grecian simplicity to perfection.
