Beautiful Cascading Bouquets for the Vintage Bride

January 15, 2015

There’s no doubt about it – the cascade wedding bouquet is firmly back on the wedding wishlist of brides everywhere. These trailing works of art, so long associated with stiff and formal arrangements, have made a return and my goodness, how beautiful they are. Gone are the motionless and super structured looks of the 1980s and in come stunning informal designs that are full of romance and natural elegance.

The revival of the waterfall or shower bouquet can certainly be linked to our love of rustic, outdoor weddings and these natural looking bouquets look brilliant in these settings. They’re also great for vintage brides as their vaguely Victorian feel certainly harks back to a bygone era. How I love them…

So what do you need to know if you’re considering a cascade bouquet for your wedding? Well, before you set your heart on a certain design, you need to speak to your florist and they need to know all about your dress. To pull of the perfect shower bouquet, the proportions need to be right and that means the bouquet and your gown need to work in harmony.

Unlike tight hand tied bouquets, waterfall arrangements flow down rather than pointing upwards. So the flowers not only hide or reveal different parts for your gown, they also need longer stems and be sure to select blooms of different lengths. Flowing greenery is also a must and natural, in-season foliage keeps the modern cascade bouquet looking organic and natural rather than forced and artificial.

You can also make some great personal additions to a cascade bouquet to work with your wedding theme. Feathers and ribbons are particularly good options and their loose, natural feel is the perfect compliment to the modern waterfall bouquet.

Cascade bouquets don’t always need to be made of flowers however. Trailing berries make a brilliant winter bouquet and elements of gold bring a seasonal touch to this alternative arrangement. Paper flowers can also be used, either made in a single colour or crafted from printed pages. Succulents and air plants also catch the eye as the shapes and shades look so different to traditional flowers.

I’m really rather taken with the modern cascade wedding bouquet. I adore the wild dramatic look and they are just so full of character and confidence. After years of unpopularity, the cascade bouquet is now the cool kid in the world of wedding flowers.
