Emily and Andy’s Wedding by Abigail Treffry

August 14, 2015

We are totally smitten with Emily and Andy’s fabulous wedding and just had to share it with you. The history and architecture of their wedding venue, the vintage red bus and a Scottish twist all combine to create the most beautiful wedding images.

Emily and Andy’s Real Wedding Photographed by Abigail Treffry

Andy and Emily met back in 2011 where they were both studying for master’s degrees at Birkbeck, University of London. She laughs that when they first met they “really had no idea what the other was saying; I'm a native New Yorker and Andy grew up in Essex”. Despite initial linguistic differences, after a couple of dates, they soon became inseparable.

For such a beautiful wedding we are impressed that it only took Emily and Andy about 3 months to plan. Emily explains that “as an international couple, we had to plan around legalities and visas, so we did not have the luxury of time on our side. Thankfully, we are both determined individuals and after a few long nights and many DIY projects later, we managed to plan an incredible day.

We chose Islington Town Hall because Angel holds such a special place in our hearts. I lived a few minutes from the venue on Upper Street for about 2 years so we were both very familiar with and quite fond of the area. Grand yet intimate, the Town Hall's Council Chamber was perfect and very us".

The photographer for the day was Abigail Treffry who, we are sure you will agree, captured the day perfectly. Abigail became a wedding photographer after moving from London to the Isle of Barra in the Outer Hebrides nine years ago so found it really interesting to cover Emily and Andrew's city wedding. Being more used to beautiful, windswept beaches she found the civic architecture of the Council Chamber in Islington a real change. She loved the fact that the “interior emphasised the importance of the ceremony taking place”.

Abigail explains that for her “wedding photography is a great job” and “the privilege of being involved becomes her inspiration to capture the story of the wedding from small details to significant moments that build a picture of the day. Usually the feel of the wedding is a big influence in how I try to represent it, including how I edit the images afterwards, and every wedding is different”.

Abigail loves the iconic wedding limo photogragh of Mick and Bianca Jagger and used this for her inspiration for the photograph of Emily and Andy in the taxi. She says “it's not the kind of image I'd normally have a chance to capture - the light was beginning to fade outside and the city was coming alive for the evening”.

Emily’s beautiful Galina Signature wedding gown was purchased in New York. She went to her appointment prepared with 3 dresses in mind, one being a Vera Wang. "To be honest, I think I knew which dress would be the one before even trying it on. The satin sheath gown with a front-slit, chapel train, and vintage feel was exactly what I was looking for. I felt elegant and confident and purchased it on the spot”. For her accessories, Emily chose Glitzy Secrets' stunning Gatsby Beauty Tiara which complemented her dress perfectly.

Emily chose not to have a bridal party as she realised that “many of my loved ones might not not be able to travel from New York to London on short notice, especially my hard-working girlfriends”. For her the highlight of the day was “celebrating at the reception. It was incredible to have so many of our loved ones from around the world under one roof, having a drink and a dance; we never thought we would see the day. In addition to various parts of the UK, guests had traveled from Poland, Prague, New York, Colorado, and even Qatar, to take part in our special day. It was absolutely amazing”.

Emily's advice for any bride to be is something we wholeheartedly agree with - "Try not to get hung up on the little details. It's impossible for everything to be perfect and in the end, everyone is there for you and your partner, not the perfectly coordinated decor or clever theme. You might step on one another's feet during your first dance, it will probably rain at some point, and it is unlikely that you will stick to the timings neatly outlined on your Order of the Day. None of this will matter. Be sure to remember the bigger picture and enjoy your day!"
