Flight Of Fancy: A Beautiful Bird Wedding Theme

July 13, 2016

I’m sure I’m not the only one who’s woken by birdsong every day at the moment and those early morning alarm calls have certainly got me thinking about a beautiful bird wedding theme. So, in honour of our feathered friends, let’s indulge in a flight of fancy for all you lovebirds out there…

The first thing to say about a bird themed wedding is that it’s super flexible and incredibly adaptable. You can weave it into a wedding of any style from elegant to rustic to on-trend tropical brights plus it can work in any season and any venue. The colour palette that sits alongside the bird motif can be anything your heart desires from pastels to more true-to-nature shades. In short, it’s the perfect starting point for you to create your own look.

In terms of outfits, any style of wedding or bridesmaid gown would look gorgeous although I have to say that I think featherlight fabrics that move beautifully would be ideal. I really love the idea of accessorising your gown with a statement bridal brooch to bring your theme to your outfit and the Bird of Beauty brooch (Sold Out) from Glitzy Secrets is just heavenly.

For the guys, a country tweed suit is the obvious (and fabulous) choice but if you’re going for a more tropical look, something lighter is the way to go. A feather buttonhole is a great touch too and looks brilliant on the guys and if you’re providing corsages for the Mums, an exuberant feathery design is glamorous, special and right on theme.

Let’s look at decorations shall we and I am a huge fan of paper cranes. These little origami birds can be made with any coloured or patterned papers and they make the best backdrops, garlands and hanging decorations plus they’re also perfect for table plans, place markers and much more. Super cute paper crane decorations are also a great wedding DIY and, although you might need a little practice, you’ll find tutorials and videos online to guide you. Once you’ve perfected the fold, let your imagination fly and use paper cranes aplenty throughout your day for impactful and cost-effective décor.

Birdcages have also become very popular of late and they’re also a really flexible option. Of course, they can be hung around your venue or placed on tables full with flowers, greenery or candles. Lots of couples also use them as holders for cards, which is a great way of keeping everything together!

Of course, eggs and nests fit with our bird theme and I’m sure I’m not the only one who can eat little chocolate eggs all year around! Jars or nests full of sweet egg treats make fabulous favours (as do birdseed hearts – another easy bridal craft) and with a tag attached, the favour can double up as a place marker too.  Little nests also make an adorable alternative for a little bridesmaid or pageboy to carry up the aisle, especially with your wedding rings inside.

If your bird themed wedding is more on the cute pastel scale, you absolutely must adorn your wedding cake with a pair of lovebirds! You’ll find all manner of bird cake toppers online whilst a more accurately ornithological look can be complimented with a bird-spotters table plan!

Whatever style of bird themed wedding you choose, your guests will love your style because after all, birds of a feather always flock together!
