Stars and Stripes: A 4th of July Wedding Theme

July 04, 2016

If you’re looking for a way to honour your American heritage as part of your big day, you’re marrying in the States, or you just love Americana, then what better theme for your day than a patriotic Fourth of July wedding? Here’s our guide to creating a wedding theme worthy of the stars and stripes…

The colour scheme

To create an Americana wedding theme, stick to red, white and blue for your colour scheme and your day will instantly feel like Independence Day. Hanging decorations such as streamers, bunting and pom poms in these colours will liven up any reception space, and if you want to go the whole hog, you can always include American flags!

The bridal look

When it comes to your wedding day look, the white dress already fits perfectly into the red, white and blue colour scheme – you just have to add blue and red accessories! A flirty, retro look works really well with an Independence Day theme, so why not add a pop of red lipstick, a birdcage veil and a gorgeous red bow hair clip like Fifties Siren from Glitzy Secrets? If you’re wearing a tea-length dress, add a vintage-inspired petticoat in blue or red with contrasting T-bar shoes to really show off your colour scheme! If you’re looking for something more modern, then a simple but chic ivory gown accessorised with statement blue drop earrings like Sapphire Starlet makes the ideal pairing – and they count as your ‘something blue’ too!

The flowers

When it comes to a bouquet to match your colour scheme, you could either choose one of your USA-inspired colours, or mix all three! For red blooms, go classic with roses or anemones (these flowers also come in white!). If you’re looking for blousy white blooms, then peonies or hydrangea are perfect; for a more delicate pop of ivory, try budget-friendly gypsophila. Royal blue flowers may be a little harder to come by, but delphiniums, nigella and hyacinths all look beautiful both on their own or as part of an arrangement.

The food

Creating an American-inspired wedding menu is as easy as pie – literally! Instead of cake, why not treat your guests to an American classic and provide a stack of delicious sweet pies, or even a dessert table with different pies to choose from?

For a true backyard barbecue wedding, you can’t go wrong with favourites like a hog roast or a make-your-own-burger bar with loads of toppings to choose from. You could also provide guests with mini portions of mac’n’cheese or hot dogs for a cute twist on American BBQ. Wash it all down with Coca-Cola – in classic glass bottles, of course!
